For over four decades, I, Donovan Ebanks, have had the distinct honor of serving the people of the Cayman Islands. It’s been a journey filled with challenges, triumphs, and a deep sense of purpose. Today, I want to share some of my experiences and the unwavering commitment to public service that has guided my path.

Early Days and a Calling to Serve

Born and raised in the Cayman Islands, the beauty of this place and the warmth of its people have always held a special place in my heart. My early life instilled a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for community. It was during these formative years that a desire to serve my fellow Caymanians began to take root.

In 1975, I embarked on my career by joining the Public Works Department. This role provided a firsthand understanding of the territory’s infrastructure needs and the vital role it plays in our daily lives. My dedication and technical aptitude were recognized early on, leading to a promotion to Chief Engineer at the young age of 30.

Leadership and Shaping the Cayman Islands

As I progressed through the ranks, I took on increasingly challenging projects, overseeing the construction and maintenance of critical infrastructure like roads, bridges, and government buildings. This period not only honed my leadership skills but also solidified my belief in the power of infrastructure to drive progress and development.

The Cayman Islands were experiencing a period of significant growth, and it was crucial to ensure our infrastructure kept pace. I championed projects that not only addressed immediate needs but also had a long-term vision for the territory’s future.

The Public Service: The Heart of Our Community

Throughout my career, I’ve always believed that public service is more than just a job; it’s a calling. It’s about putting the needs of the community first and working tirelessly to improve the lives of all Caymanians.

This philosophy guided my approach to leadership. I fostered a collaborative environment within the Public Works Department, valuing the expertise and contributions of every team member. Building strong relationships with other government departments was also paramount, ensuring a cohesive approach to development.

Beyond Infrastructure: A Holistic Approach

While infrastructure development remained a core focus, I recognized the importance of a holistic approach to public service. This included advocating for initiatives that addressed social and environmental concerns.

Investing in education and healthcare programs was crucial for a thriving society. Similarly, protecting our environment was essential for the long-term sustainability of the Cayman Islands. I actively championed policies and projects that addressed these critical areas.

The Honor of Serving as Deputy Governor

In recognition of my contributions to public service, I was immensely honored to be appointed the first Deputy Governor of the Cayman Islands. This new role allowed me to contribute at a broader level, working alongside the Governor to navigate the territory through various challenges and opportunities.

During my tenure as Deputy Governor, we focused on strengthening the Cayman Islands’ reputation as a global financial center while fostering economic diversification. We also prioritized initiatives that addressed social and environmental concerns, ensuring a sustainable future for our islands.

As I reflect on my journey, I am filled with immense gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of the Cayman Islands. The challenges were many, but the rewards of seeing our community grow and prosper have been immeasurable.
