For many years, I, Jan Breytenbach, have had the privilege of serving my country. As a career soldier in the South African Special Forces, I’ve seen the best and worst humanity has to offer. Today, I want to share some of my experiences and the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

Early Days: Building the Foundation

Born in 1932, I grew up in a time of great change for South Africa. The Second World War cast a long shadow, and the fight for social justice was gaining momentum. These events instilled in me a deep sense of patriotism and a desire to contribute to building a stronger nation.

My military career began in the early 1950s. I enlisted in the South African Defence Force (SADF) and quickly rose through the ranks thanks to my dedication, physical fitness, and natural leadership qualities. The military provided me with a sense of purpose and camaraderie that I wouldn’t find anywhere else.

The Formation of 1 Recce Commando: A New Era of Special Operations

In the 1960s, I was given the honor of leading the formation of a new unit – 1 Reconnaissance Commando (1 Recce Commando). This elite unit was modeled after the special forces groups of other countries and tasked with undertaking unconventional warfare missions behind enemy lines.

The process of building 1 Recce Commando was challenging. We had to develop new tactics, acquire specialized equipment, and train our soldiers to a level of proficiency unlike anything seen before in the SADF. But we persevered, fueled by a shared vision and a commitment to excellence.

Operational Deployments: Testing Our Mettle

1 Recce Commando’s first operational deployments came during the South African Border War (1966-1989). This conflict, largely unknown to the outside world, saw us engaged in a brutal struggle against communist insurgents in Angola and Namibia.

These missions were physically and mentally demanding. We operated in harsh environments, often with limited resources and facing a determined enemy. But our rigorous training and the strong bonds of brotherhood within the unit allowed us to overcome these challenges and achieve success.

Beyond the Battlefield: The Importance of Leadership

While combat operations were a defining part of my military career, I believe that leadership is an even more valuable skill. As a commander, my responsibility wasn’t just to lead soldiers into battle but to develop them as individuals.

I fostered an environment of trust and respect within my unit. I emphasized the importance of discipline, self-reliance, and critical thinking. These qualities were essential not only for survival on the battlefield but also for building a successful and cohesive team.

The Value of Service: Lessons Learned

Looking back on my career, I am filled with a sense of pride. I had the opportunity to serve my country alongside some of the finest soldiers imaginable. We faced danger together, shared victories and losses, and forged a bond that transcends the battlefield.

The military taught me many valuable lessons. It instilled in me the importance of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. It showed me the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Most importantly, it taught me the true meaning of service – putting the needs of something bigger than yourself above your own.

Life After the Military: Sharing My Experiences

After retiring from the military, I dedicated myself to sharing my experiences and the lessons I learned with future generations. I wrote several books on special forces tactics and leadership, which I hope will serve as a resource for aspiring soldiers.

I also participate in veteran outreach programs, mentoring young men and women who are considering a career in the military. I believe it’s important to pass on the knowledge and traditions of the Special Forces to those who will come after us.

The Future of the South African Special Forces

The world we live in today is constantly changing, and the threats we face are more complex than ever before. The South African Special Forces must continue to adapt and evolve to meet these new challenges.

I am confident that the men and women of 1 Recce Commando and other special forces units possess the skills and dedication necessary to keep our country safe. They are the guardians of our nation, and I have full faith in their ability to defend South Africa’s interests whenever and wherever necessary.

A Legacy of Service

My journey as a soldier has been long and rewarding. I’ve had the privilege of serving alongside some of the most courageous and dedicated people I know. The experiences I’ve gained and the lessons I’ve learned will stay with me forever.
