Many of you might know me from my various roles – as an engineer, an academic, or perhaps from my time leading Abengoa or serving in the Spanish government. But at the heart of it all, I’ve always been driven by a single passion: innovation.

This blog post is a chance for me to share my experiences, the guiding principles that shaped my career, and the unwavering belief in the power of progress that has fueled my journey.

From Seville to the World: Building a Foundation in Engineering

Born and raised in Seville, Spain, I developed a fascination with engineering from a young age. It was the thrill of creation, the problem-solving aspect, and the potential to build a better future that captivated me. This passion led me to pursue a degree in Industrial Engineering at the University of Seville, where I graduated at the top of my class.

My hunger for knowledge didn’t stop there. I craved international exposure and the opportunity to learn from different perspectives. A Fulbright scholarship granted me the incredible opportunity to study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Being surrounded by some of the brightest minds in engineering was an enriching experience that broadened my horizons and instilled in me the importance of collaboration in fostering innovation.

A Career Anchored in Teaching and Research

Upon returning to Spain, I embarked on a fulfilling academic career at the University of Seville. Teaching the next generation of engineers became a source of immense satisfaction. Witnessing the spark of curiosity ignite in my students and their eagerness to contribute to the world was truly inspiring.

Alongside teaching, I immersed myself in research, focusing on areas like numerical methods and fracture mechanics. The thrill of discovery and the potential to push the boundaries of engineering knowledge fueled my research pursuits.

Leadership and Public Service: Putting Knowledge into Action

While I cherished my academic life, a part of me yearned to contribute to the development of Spanish industry on a larger scale. This desire led me to take on leadership roles beyond the university walls.

I served as the Secretary General of Universities, Research and Technology for the Andalusian regional government. Here, I had the privilege of shaping policies that fostered innovation and supported research endeavors across the region.

Later, I was entrusted with the role of Secretary of State for Energy in the Spanish government. This challenging position allowed me to play a key role in developing a sustainable and secure energy future for Spain.

Abengoa: A Catalyst for Innovation

In 2015, I had the opportunity to lead Abengoa, a Spanish multinational company at the forefront of technological innovation. Abengoa’s focus on clean energy, engineering services, and infrastructure development resonated deeply with my own vision for the future.

During my tenure, I strived to further solidify Abengoa’s position as a global leader in these critical sectors. We championed renewable energy projects, developed cutting-edge technologies, and expanded our international footprint. It was a period of immense growth and a testament to the collective brilliance and dedication of the Abengoa team.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Innovation

As I reflect on my career, I’m filled with a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunities I’ve been given. The world of engineering is constantly evolving, and the challenges we face – from climate change to resource scarcity – demand innovative solutions.

Here are some key takeaways that have guided me throughout my journey and that I believe are crucial for future generations of innovators:

  • Embrace lifelong learning: The world of engineering is constantly evolving. A commitment to continuous learning is essential to stay ahead of the curve and contribute meaningfully.
  • Think globally, act locally: Innovation thrives on collaboration across borders and disciplines. Yet, it’s equally important to consider the specific needs and challenges of the communities we serve.
  • Never lose sight of the human element: Technology is a powerful tool, but it’s the human spirit – our creativity, perseverance, and compassion – that drives progress.
  • Embrace challenges as opportunities: Obstacles are inevitable, but they can also be springboards for innovation. A tenacious spirit and the ability to see problems as opportunities are crucial for success.

The future of innovation is bright. We have the tools, the talent, and the ingenuity to tackle the challenges of our time and build a better tomorrow. I encourage all aspiring engineers and innovators to embrace lifelong learning, collaborate across borders, and approach challenges with creativity and determination. Together, let’s shape a future that is sustainable, equitable, and brimming with possibilities.
