It’s Pamela Stephenson here. Many of you might know me from my comedic escapades on shows like “Not the Nine O’Clock News” or even my brief stint on “Saturday Night Live.” But life has a funny way of taking unexpected turns, and for me, that turn led from the stage to the therapist’s chair.

Today, I want to share my journey – the laughter, the challenges, and the incredible experiences that have shaped who I am.

Growing Up Down Under and Taking the Stage

Born in New Zealand and raised in Australia, my life wasn’t always about punchlines and pratfalls. However, there was always a spark of theatricality within me. Whether it was putting on impromptu performances for my family or diving into school plays, I reveled in the power of storytelling and making people laugh.

This passion led me to pursue acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Australia. After honing my craft on stage and television, I set my sights on the bright lights of London. It was a bold move, but one that opened doors I could never have imagined.

Comedy Gold and Breaking Barriers

The late 1970s saw me land a spot on the iconic British satire show “Not the Nine O’Clock News.” Alongside comedic powerhouses like Rowan Atkinson, Mel Smith, and Griff Rhys Jones, we poked fun at everything from politics to pop culture. It was a whirlwind of creativity, pushing boundaries and making audiences roar with laughter.

Being a woman in comedy back then wasn’t always easy. The industry was male-dominated, and some struggled to see women as anything more than the ‘straight man’ or the damsel in distress. But I refused to be limited. I embraced strong, comedic characters, often using satire and wit to challenge stereotypes.

Hollywood Dreams and a Life-Changing Encounter

The success of “Not the Nine O’Clock News” opened doors in Hollywood. I landed roles in films like “History of the World, Part I” and “Superman III.” It was an exciting time, working with talented actors and directors. But amidst the glitz and glamour, another passion was beginning to stir within me.

During this period, I had a chance encounter that would change my life forever. A friend introduced me to the world of psychology. As I delved deeper, I became fascinated by the human mind, the intricate workings of emotions and behavior. This newfound interest sparked a fire within me, a desire to understand people on a deeper level.

From Stage Lights to Spotlight on Mental Health

The decision to pursue a career in psychology wasn’t an easy one. It meant leaving the world of entertainment behind, a world that had given me so much. But the desire to help people, to truly understand the complexities of the human experience, proved to be a stronger calling.

I enrolled at the California Graduate Institute and embarked on a rigorous journey to become a clinical psychologist. It was challenging, demanding years of study, research, and practical training. But with every step, my conviction grew stronger.

Using My Voice for Advocacy

While establishing my psychology practice, another cause became close to my heart – food safety. As a mother raising my own children, I became increasingly concerned about the use of certain chemicals in our food. This led me to co-found the Parents for Safe Food group, which successfully lobbied for a ban on a potentially harmful chemical used on apples and pears.

This experience highlighted the power of using my voice for positive change, not just through comedy but also through advocacy.

Helping People Navigate Life’s Challenges

Today, my work as a psychologist allows me to connect with people on a deeply personal level. I help individuals navigate anxieties, depression, and the many challenges life throws our way. It’s a privilege to witness their transformations, their journeys towards greater self-understanding and well-being.

Writing and Sharing My Knowledge

My passion for psychology extends beyond the therapy room. I’ve authored several books, including “Head Case: Treat Yourself to Better Mental Health” and “Sex Life: How Our Sexual Experiences Shape Our Lives.”

Through my writing, I hope to offer accessible and insightful information on mental health issues.

Looking Back and Moving Forward

Looking back at my journey, it’s sometimes hard to believe all the twists and turns. From the vibrant world of comedy to the introspective world of psychology, my life has been a tapestry woven with laughter, learning, and a deep connection with people.

Comedy honed my ability to connect with audiences, to understand human behavior and deliver it in a way that resonates. Now, with my background in psychology, I get to witness people’s vulnerabilities and strengths firsthand, helping them navigate the complexities of life.
